TAS Flood Watch: North West catchments

Flood Watch Number: 3

Isolated minor flooding may develop in the North West catchments from Thursday. Minor Flood Warnings are current for the Huon and Derwent Rivers.

A strong westerly to southwesterly flow will persist over Tasmania during Wednesday, before easing during Thursday. An embedded front will cross the State Wednesday evening.

Catchments are saturated from winter rainfall.

In the 24 hours to 9 am Wednesday, widespread rainfall totals of 10-40 mm were recorded in the flood watch catchments, with isolated higher totals up to 82 mm at Cradle Valley.

Widespread rainfall totals of 10-20 mm are forecast for Wednesday, with higher totals possible in the elevated areas. Additional totals of 5-10 mm are forecast for Thursday. No significant rainfall totals are forecast for Friday.

River rises are occurring due to high rainfall totals over the last couple of days and some dams are spilling. Isolated minor flooding is possible from Thursday based on forecast rainfall.

Catchment specific warnings will be issued if and when required.

Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard over the next couple of days.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

Mersey River
Forth River
Northwest and Central Coastal Rivers
Arthur River

Flood warnings are current for the following catchments: Huon River, Derwent River Channel Coastal Rivers (South East Cape to Gordon), Derwent River.
